Renowned physicist and Nobel Laureate Steven Weinberg once said: “that the more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it also seems pointless …” as, similarly, one might make the observation that, as much as our sciences have discovered about the evolution of life and our species on this planet, there is the larger question of why this planet brought us about and what – if anything – is expected of us. Currently there are no answers beyond the fabrications of religion.
And so we make it up as we go along … but if the history of our species tells us anything: we haven’t been particularly successful at that, don’t you think? In particular in relation to how we have treated each other over time: we appear to be our own worst enemy, as evidenced by the millions of people that perished over the centuries in conflicts between nations or through other means of mass destruction such as the Holocaust.
However, the idea here is not to dwell on such tragic issues. Instead, I ‘m attempting to highlight and perhaps even clarify various ideas, concepts and events of human thought and behaviour as demonstrated over time and that appear to be worthy of further exploration in order to make sense of them.
In the meantime this blog will likely prove to be a meandering, repetitive – and at times naïve and confusing – collection of personal thoughts and observations of our troubled world.
As to why I bother to put any of this on the internet, well, your guess is as good as mine. To paraphrase something Franz Kafka once said: it is not that anyone has asked me to, but that is immaterial.
